Stella Ellen McLean, a 45-year-old Caucasian woman, was a schoolteacher living in Gering, Nebraska. Her life took a tragic and mysterious turn on the evening of February 7, 1978, when she vanished from a restaurant in the neighboring city of Scottsbluff. McLean was never seen alive again. Her car was discovered a couple of days later in the restaurant's parking lot, offering no immediate clues as to her whereabouts.
Her husband, Tom, had reported her missing the day after her disappearance, sparking an investigation by local law enforcement.
The case remained a troubling mystery for months until a gruesome discovery was made on April 15, 1978. McLean's decapitated body was found near Interstate 25, about two miles north of Wheatland, Wyoming. The remains were unclothed and lacked any form of identification. Investigators determined that she had been sexually assaulted and strangled before being decapitated. Despite the efforts of law enforcement, her head was never recovered. The state of decomposition, particularly around her hands, made immediate identification challenging. It wasn't until March 1983, five years after her disappearance, that the body was positively identified as Stella McLean through fingerprint analysis.
A significant development in the investigation came when notorious serial killer Henry Lee Lucas confessed to her murder. Lucas claimed he had accomplices, including Ottis Toole and two others. An investigator from the Scotts Bluff County Sheriff's Department questioned Lucas in September 1984 and found his testimony compelling, despite attempts to trick him. Initially, authorities were hopeful, as Lucas had confessed to numerous other murders. However, his credibility soon came under scrutiny. It was later revealed that he had falsely confessed to the vast majority of those crimes, often with details provided by law enforcement. Further investigation into his claims regarding McLean's murder revealed that his named accomplices were confirmed to be at their school in Florida on the day of her disappearance, casting serious doubt on his confession.
Lucas eventually recanted his confession to the murder of Stella McLean, along with all his other confessions. While he was convicted of eleven other murders, his connection to McLean's case dissolved. No other suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with her death. The murder of Stella McLean remains an unsolved cold case, a haunting mystery for both the community she left behind and the law enforcement agencies in Nebraska and Wyoming that continue to seek answers.
