Herbert Hauptreif, an 8-year-old boy, tragically lost his life in May 1923 due to arsenic poisoning. His death was part of a series of mysterious fatalities within his family, which raised suspicions and ultimately led to an investigation. Herbert was one of four children of William Hauptreif and his second wife, Anna Hauptreif, who succumbed to the same unidentified illness within a short span of time. His older siblings, Lydia and Walter, died in early April 1923, followed by Herbert in May, and finally Anna, the last surviving child, in November of the same year.
The deaths initially appeared to be a tragic coincidence, but concerns grew when William Hauptreif himself fell ill with similar symptoms. Medical professionals at the Soldier, Sailors, and Marines Memorial Hospital in San Marcos, Texas, discovered that he had been poisoned with arsenic. This revelation prompted a deeper investigation into the deaths of his children, leading authorities to suspect foul play.
The primary suspect in the case was Anna Hauptreif, also known as Anna Schulze, who had married William after the death of her first husband, Kurt Schroeder. Anna had a history of suspicious circumstances surrounding her relationships, as her first husband also died under mysterious conditions. Investigators found that Anna had coerced William into signing over his farm to her before he fell ill, further strengthening suspicions against her. When tested, a drink she had prepared for William showed traces of arsenic.
On July 29, 1923, Anna Hauptreif confessed to District Attorney Fred Bundell that she had poisoned her husband and four of her stepchildren. She admitted to placing arsenic in cold coffee that the children drank after school. Her confession led to her arrest and imprisonment in Hays County Jail, where she awaited trial. However, before she could face justice, Anna took her own life on October 31, 1924, by hanging herself in her jail cell. She was pregnant at the time, and her suicide also resulted in the death of her unborn child.
Anna Hauptreif's crimes marked her as one of Texas' most notorious serial killers, and her case remains a chilling example of familial betrayal and calculated murder. The deaths of Herbert Hauptreif and his siblings were ultimately attributed to their stepmother’s deliberate poisoning, bringing a tragic end to their young lives.
