Mads Sorenson, a 45-year-old Norwegian-American man, passed away on July 30, 1900, under circumstances that later raised suspicions. Sorenson had taken out two life insurance policies, and on the day of his death, both policies were active simultaneously—one was expiring, while the other was beginning. His wife, Belle Gunness, claimed that Sorenson had returned home complaining of a headache, and she provided him with quinine powder for relief. When she later checked on him, he was found dead.
