Janecia Peters, a 25-year-old Black woman, was tragically found dead on January 1, 2007, in an alley located in the 9500 block of South Western Avenue in Los Angeles. Her body was discovered by a homeless man searching for cans, and she had been shot and covered with a garbage bag. Initially listed as an unidentified female, her death was later linked to a series of murders attributed to the notorious serial killer known as the "Grim Sleeper".
The investigation into Janecia Peters'
murder revealed that her killer had a history of targeting vulnerable individuals, primarily Black women, over several decades. DNA evidence connected her death to Lonnie David Franklin Jr., a 57-year-old Black man who was arrested on July 7, 2010. Franklin, a former city trash collector and vehicle mechanic for the LAPD, was charged with ten counts of murder, including Janecia Peters' case. The Grim Sleeper earned his moniker due to a 14-year hiatus in his killing spree, spanning from 1988 to 2002.
Franklin's trial began in February 2016, and he was convicted on May 5, 2016, for the murders of nine women and one teenage girl. The jury recommended the death penalty, and he was sentenced to death on August 10, 2016. The case highlighted systemic issues in addressing violence against marginalized communities, as many of the victims were street sex workers or individuals struggling with addiction. Franklin's crimes spanned from 1984 to 2007, leaving a chilling legacy of violence and loss.
