On July 27, 1989, 81-year-old white female Ruby P. Swisher died while residing at Bowman's Nursing Home in Ormond Beach, Florida. Initially, her death was considered to be from natural causes. However, subsequent investigations revealed that she was one of several elderly patients murdered by Jeffrey Lynn Feltner, a 26-year-old former nurse's aide. Feltner had been employed at multiple nursing facilities across Florida, including New Life Acres in Melrose and Clyatt Memorial Center in Daytona Beach, where he committed a series of patient murders between 1988 and 1989.
Feltner's pattern involved smothering elderly patients, often under the guise of alleviating their suffering. In July 1989, shortly after Swisher's death, Feltner experienced a mental breakdown and confessed to the killings during a call to a local television station. He was arrested on August 10, 1989, and charged with multiple counts of murder. During interrogations, Feltner admitted to the crimes, stating that he acted out of a compulsion to end the patients' suffering.
At trial, Feltner initially recanted his confessions, claiming he fabricated them to expose poor conditions in the nursing homes. Nevertheless, he eventually pleaded guilty to two counts of first-degree murder as part of a plea deal to avoid the death penalty. He was sentenced to 25 years to life in prison. Feltner died on March 17, 1993, from complications related to AIDS while incarcerated at Florida State Prison in Raiford.
