Lathan Thornton, an 82-year-old man from Gainesville, Florida, passed away on February 8, 1988, in Melrose, Florida. Thornton had spent most of his life in the Gainesville area and was known for his contributions as the co-founder of Alachua Furniture Company and Imperial House. He also served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and was an active member of various organizations, including the R.T.
Schafer Lodge 350 F&AM in Gainesville and the Morocco Temple Shrine.
Thornton's death was later linked to Jeffrey Lynn Feltner, a former nurse's aide who was responsible for smothering multiple patients to death between 1988 and 1989. Feltner had anonymously contacted a crisis hotline in July 1988, confessing to the killings and claiming that he had an uncontrollable impulse to end their suffering. Among his victims was Thornton, whose death was initially assumed to be natural. Despite Feltner admitting to the murder, he was never formally charged for Thornton's death as part of a plea deal.
Feltner was eventually apprehended on August 10, 1989, and convicted of two counts of first-degree murder. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but died in 1993 from complications related to AIDS while incarcerated.
