In 1976, Jeffrey Joseph Daugherty, a 20-year-old male, embarked on a violent crime spree across multiple states, resulting in the deaths of at least five individuals. Among his victims was Judy Campbell, a 50-year-old female, who was killed during a robbery at a business in Volusia County, Florida. Daugherty's accomplice during these crimes was his girlfriend, Bonnie Jean Heath.
**Crime Spree and Arrest**
Daugherty and Heath left Michigan in January 1976, traveling to Florida purportedly to seek employment and visit Heath's children. On February 23, 1976, Daugherty robbed an Easy Way food store in Flagler County, Florida, during which he shot and killed Carmen Abrams, a 68-year-old female employee, and seriously wounded her husband. Subsequently, on March 1, 1976, the pair picked up Lavonne Patricia Sailer, a 48-year-old female hitchhiker, in Melbourne, Florida. They took her to an isolated area near the Brevard County dump, where Daugherty robbed her of $15 and then shot her five times at close range with a .22 caliber pistol.
The crime spree continued into Pennsylvania. On March 11, 1976, during an armed robbery at the Shaw Oil Company in Duncansville, Pennsylvania, Daugherty shot and killed George Karns, an 18-year-old male attendant, by shooting him five times in the head. The following day, March 12, 1976, Daugherty and Heath were apprehended in Virginia shortly after committing an armed robbery in that state. At the time of their arrest, they were traveling in a vehicle identified as being used in the Blair County crimes and possessed the handgun used in the Karns murder, along with other tangible evidence connected to various offenses.
**Legal Proceedings and Sentencing**
Daugherty faced multiple charges across different jurisdictions. He pleaded guilty to the first-degree murder, robbery, and kidnapping of Lavonne Sailer. A jury recommended a death sentence, which the trial judge imposed. The Florida Supreme Court affirmed this decision.
In Pennsylvania, Daugherty was convicted by a jury of first-degree murder and other offenses related to the killing of George Karns. Initially sentenced to death, his sentence was later commuted to life imprisonment following intervening court decisions.
Bonnie Jean Heath, Daugherty's accomplice, was also charged in connection with these crimes. She pleaded guilty to a reduced charge of second-degree murder for her role in the killing of Judy Campbell and received a 25-year sentence.
**Execution**
After exhausting his appeals, Daugherty was executed in Florida's electric chair on November 7, 1988, at the age of 33. In his final statement, he expressed a sense of liberation from his years in prison and encouraged other death row inmates to continue fighting against the death penalty.
