The devastating answer to their desperate search came on August 14th in the neighboring town of Montvale. Behind an apartment complex on Rolling Ridge Road, the bodies of Lorraine and Mary Ann were discovered in a wooded area.
The scene was one of unimaginable violence; both girls were found naked, having been brutally beaten, sexually assaulted, and strangled or suffocated.
The senseless double homicide launched a massive investigation, yet for decades, the case grew cold, leaving a void in the lives of the girls' loved ones and a lingering fear in the community. Investigators explored various theories, including the possibility of a local perpetrator or a transient serial killer. Richard Cottingham, a notorious serial killer known as the 'Torso Killer' and the 'New York Ripper,' who was already serving multiple life sentences for other murders, confessed to the killings of Lorraine Kelly and Mary Ann Pryor. Cottingham provided chilling details that only the killer could have known, admitting he had abducted the girls, held them captive in a motel room where he repeatedly assaulted them, and ultimately drowned them in a bathtub before discarding their bodies in the woods of Montvale. His confession, nearly 47 years after the crime, finally provided a name and a face to the monster who had stolen the lives of two young women on a summer day.
