Russell Duane Rugh, a 15-year-old Caucasian male, was tragically murdered on March 21, 1980. Born on March 18, 1965, in Garden Grove, Orange County, California, Russell was abducted while waiting for a bus to take him to his fast-food job. He was bound, beaten, and strangled to death after an estimated eight hours of captivity. His body was discarded alongside that of another victim, Glenn Barker, in Cleveland National Forest, close to the Ortega Highway.
Both bodies were discovered on March 23, 1980.
Russell Rugh was one of the victims of the notorious California serial killer, William Bonin, also known as "The Freeway Killer." Bonin was convicted of the rape, torture, and murder of 14 boys and young men between 1968 and 1980. He confessed to 21 murders and was suspected of even more. Bonin was executed by lethal injection at San Quentin State Prison in 1996. Prosecutors portrayed him as "the most arch-evil person who ever existed."
