W. Obe Spencer, a 27-year-old African American grocery store executive, was murdered on the evening of May 29, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in a car on an isolated road, known as a local lovers' lane, with schoolteacher Laura Wheaton Johnson when they were approached by an assailant. The attacker, later identified as Charles Barr, snuck up on the couple's vehicle. Despite Johnson's screams upon seeing him, Barr immediately shot Spencer with a. 25 caliber pistol, killing him instantly.
