W. Obe Spencer, a 27-year-old African American grocery store executive, was murdered on the evening of May 29, 1923, in Memphis, Tennessee. He was in a car on an isolated road, known as a local lovers' lane, with schoolteacher Laura Wheaton Johnson when they were approached by an assailant. The attacker, later identified as Charles Barr, snuck up on the couple's vehicle.
