City Marshal Marcus Tillman Cage, aged 34, was accidentally shot in the top of his head and mortally wounded by W.J. Schubert on October 14, 1903, in Mineola, Texas. Marshal Cage was attempting to assist W.D. Kitchens, a local businessman who had just been shot by Schubert, when he was struck by a bullet. The incident occurred during an argument and gunfight on Johnson Street in Mineola, which started over allegations that Kitchens had violated liquor laws.
