Constable John S. Wofford, aged 32, of the Wood County Constable's Office - Precinct 3 in Texas, was fatally shot on February 4, 1907, in Quitman, TX. He and his brother, Deputy Sheriff Amos Wofford, were attempting to arrest a father and son for liquor violations at the intersection of Elm and Bowery Street in Winnsboro. During the arrest attempt, one of the suspects produced a handgun and opened fire, fatally wounding both lawmen. In return fire, both suspects were also shot and killed.
