Daniel Henry Cooper, a 32-year-old man of Caucasian ethnicity, was shot and killed on November 16, 1910, in Kirbyville, Texas. Cooper served as a constable for Jasper County Precinct 3. His death was the result of a confrontation with a sheriff's deputy who had recently lost an election to Cooper.
On the day of his death, Cooper had arrested a subject and needed the key to the county jail. He went to a local pool hall to find the sheriff's deputy and request the key. An argument ensued, and the deputy shot Cooper. Cooper succumbed to his injuries the following day. Witnesses reported that the deputy and his friend had threatened revenge against Cooper earlier that night.
The deputy and his friend were both charged with murder. The deputy was convicted twice, but the case was dismissed on a technicality during an appeal. Despite the dismissal, the incident remains a notable case in Jasper County's history. Cooper was survived by his wife and four children.
