On the morning of Sunday, October 20, 2024, the body of 34-year-old Mitchell Jackson Jr. was discovered in the Russell neighborhood of Louisville, Kentucky, presenting a gruesome scene that initiated a major homicide investigation. Officers from the Louisville Metro Police Department responded to a call regarding a 'person down' near the intersection of South 18th Street and West Muhammad Ali Boulevard just before 9:00 a.m. Upon arrival, they found Jackson lying in the roadway, bound and wrapped in a manner that initially concealed his injuries.
Investigators determined that Jackson had been shot multiple times, which was ruled as the cause of death by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office. The condition of the body suggested a deliberate attempt to hide the crime; he was wrapped in sheets and garbage bags, secured tightly with zip ties and electrical tape. Detectives believe that Jackson was killed at a different location before his body was transported to the intersection. Disturbing details from an arrest report indicated that the body had been tied to the bumper of a vehicle and dragged through the streets for several blocks before coming loose and being abandoned in the road.
Two suspects were subsequently identified and charged in connection with the case. Police arrested 35-year-old Chadwick Fleming, who was seen on security footage dragging the victim’s body by the feet and attempting to load it back into his car after it had detached. Fleming was initially charged with tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse, but a grand jury later indicted him on an additional charge of murder. A second suspect, 26-year-old Davone Collins, was also indicted for tampering with physical evidence and abuse of a corpse for his alleged role in the disposal of the body. Authorities stated that the incident appeared to be isolated, though the brutal nature of the disposal drew significant community attention.
