Juan Espinoza Sr., a 62-year-old Hispanic man from Taft, Texas, tragically lost his life on October 13, 2018. The shooting took place in the 500 block of Wilburn Street, where four men, including Espinoza Sr., were killed, and another man was injured.
The incident began when one of Espinoza Sr.'s family members accused him of being a "peeping Tom" and looking into a window at the
residence earlier that year. During the birthday party, Ronnie Rodriguez Jr., the son of Ronnie Rodriguez Sr., confronted Espinoza Sr. and exchanged words with him. Espinoza Sr. left the party but returned shortly after with four other men. An argument ensued, and Ronnie Rodriguez Jr. pulled out a handgun and fired a shot, which missed everyone. Ronnie Rodriguez Sr. then took the gun from his son and opened fire, killing four men, including Espinoza Sr., and injuring another.
Both Ronnie Rodriguez Sr. and his son, Ronnie Rodriguez Jr., were arrested in connection with the shooting. Ronnie Rodriguez Sr. was indicted on capital murder charges, while his son faced charges of deadly conduct discharging a firearm. The case drew significant attention, and in August 2021, Ronnie Rodriguez Jr. was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
