Tina Cappa, a 52-year-old woman of Hispanic ethnicity, tragically died on March 9, 2019, in New Caney, Texas. She worked as a bookkeeper at 59 Marine, a boat shop in New Caney, and was also the roommate of the shop's owner, Jimmy Don Lane. On the evening of her death, Lane and Cappa had an argument, and Lane, who had been drinking heavily, called 911 claiming he had shot an intruder.
However, when police arrived, they found that Lane had actually shot Cappa in the face with a 12-gauge shotgun.
Lane initially claimed that the shooting was an accident, stating that he and Cappa had heard voices outside and suspected someone was trying to steal from the business. He said he retrieved the shotgun from his bedroom and accidentally discharged it while walking toward Cappa. However, the state's investigation refuted his account, pointing out inconsistencies in his story and evidence suggesting that the shooting was intentional. Crime scene investigators found bloodstain patterns that contradicted Lane's version of events, and it was revealed that Lane had previously threatened others with firearms.
After a thorough investigation, Lane was arrested and charged with Cappa's murder. The case went to trial, and on October 21, 2022, a jury found Lane guilty of first-degree murder.
