Guadalupe Salinas Jr., a 35-year-old Hispanic male, tragically passed away on June 8, 2020, in Weslaco, Texas. Guadalupe was born on July 11, 1984, to Mr. Guadalupe Salinas and Mrs. Juana Yzaguirre Salinas in Weslaco, Texas. He was preceded in death by his father, Mr. Guadalupe Salinas. Guadalupe Jr. left behind his mother, Juana Y. Salinas, his sons Angel Gael Salinas, Jose Jordan Salinas, and Ethan Salinas, his brother Jesus Andres Salinas, and his sister Laura Balboa.
The funeral services for Guadalupe Salinas Jr. were held at Salinas Funeral Home, with interment following at Sacred Park Cemetery in Mercedes.
On June 8, 2020, Guadalupe Salinas Jr. was shot three times with a 9mm handgun by Angel Herrera, a 25-year-old male, in Weslaco, Texas. The shooting occurred in the 2400 block of 12th Street and Pleasant View Drive. The incident led to a three-hour manhunt and a lockdown at Weslaco East High School. Responding officers found Guadalupe Salinas Jr. slumped over inside a white Mercury with eight bullet holes in it, parked on the roadway in front of the driveway. He had been shot three times and succumbed to his injuries.
Angel Herrera was arrested following the manhunt and was found barricaded inside a bedroom with a handgun. During his arrest, multiple bags of marijuana and other controlled substances were seized from his residence. Herrera claimed self-defense, stating that he shot Guadalupe Salinas Jr. because he believed Salinas was going to kill him. However, text messages recovered from Herrera's phone revealed a growing dispute between the two men that led to the murder. Surveillance footage showed Herrera standing in the roadway as if waiting for someone before the shooting occurred.
Angel Herrera was found guilty of murder, possession of a controlled substance , and possession of marijuana. He was sentenced to 64 years in prison for the murder charge, 20 years for possession of a controlled substance, and one-and-a-half years for possession of marijuana. The case was prosecuted by Assistant District Attorneys Ben Abila and Jose Garcia, with assistance from the Weslaco Police Department, Texas Department of Public Safety, and the FBI. The trial took place from June 21 to June 23, 2022, and the verdict was reached on June 23, 2022. The Honorable Judge Bobby Flores of the 139th District Court presided over the case.
