Michael Jermaine Odum, a 29-year-old African American man from Longview, Texas, tragically lost his life on June 20, 2020, in Gilmer, TX. The incident occurred around 12:15 a.m. when the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office responded to a shooting call at a residence in the 2500 block of US Highway 154 east of Gilmer. Upon arrival, deputies found Odum lying in the driveway with a gunshot wound to the chest.
Despite being rushed to a local hospital, he was pronounced dead shortly after.
The suspect, identified as Dylan Lee Baker, a 22-year-old resident of Gilmer, was still at the scene and was taken into custody by the deputies. Baker was charged with murder and held in the Upshur County Jail awaiting arraignment, with a bond set at $1 million.
The shooting was under investigation by the Upshur County Sheriff’s Office, and the community was deeply affected by the loss of Odum. A Unity in the Community Prayer Vigil was held in his honor, drawing over 100 community members who gathered to offer prayers and show support for his family and friends.
