The Graham Police Department, Texas Rangers, Young County District Attorney’s Office, and Wichita Falls Crime Stoppers unit were all involved in the investigation.

The investigation revealed that Williams had been murdered, and the suspect, Brett Aaron Lippert, 37, of Fredericksburg, Texas, was identified. Lippert was suspected of killing Williams during a burglary and unauthorized use of a vehicle. He was seen leaving Williams' residence with items from inside and driving away in Williams' pickup truck, a 2002 white over black GMC Sierra. Lippert was eventually arrested on March 3, 2021, in Temple, Texas, and was found in possession of Williams' stolen vehicle. Under a plea deal, Lippert pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole in 40 years. The plea deal was reached in consultation with the Williams family, ensuring that Lippert would not be able to walk the streets again.
