John Calloway, a 31-year-old man from Hallettsville, Texas, was tragically shot and killed early Sunday morning, July 18, 2021, at a party in rural Lavaca County. The party, which had been posted on social media, attracted a large crowd and was held at the 2100 block of County Road 157A southeast of Hallettsville near the community of Vienna. Calloway was found dead from a gunshot wound, and the incident was quickly investigated by the Lavaca County Sheriff’s Office.
The suspect in the case, Deandre Enoch, a 19-year-old former star running back and linebacker for the Yoakum High School football team, was arrested later the same day on charges of murder. Enoch was held at the Lavaca County Jail on a $750,000 bond. The shooting was not related to another shooting that took place the same night outside the Yoakum Community Center.
In January 2025, Enoch entered a guilty plea for manslaughter, a lesser charge than murder. The plea deal was accepted under the condition that Enoch would be sentenced on January 27, 2025. The case had previously faced a mistrial in 2022 when it was revealed that the prosecuting lawyer had allowed her law license to expire. Enoch, who was 20 years old at the time of the arrest, has remained in jail since his booking and has filed for indigency, indicating he cannot afford legal expenses.
