Tommy Ray Freney III, a 28-year-old man from Fort Worth, Texas, tragically lost his life on August 4, 2022. Freney was killed in a shooting outside the Westside Saloon on Alta Mere Drive in west Fort Worth. According to the Tarrant County Medical Examiner’s Office, Freney died from a gunshot wound to the head around 2:15 a.m. after shots were fired during a fight. He was found dead in a parking lot outside the bar.
Freney was described by his mother, Carla Ray Cooks, as a loving and caring father to two boys and two girls, with another child on the way. Standing at 6-foot-4, Freney was known for his kind and giving nature, and he was a beloved brother to six sisters from both sides of his family. He was a high-spirited individual who loved to travel and was known for his ability to lighten up any room.
The investigation into Freney's death led to the arrest and eventual conviction of 25-year-old Francis Sparks. Sparks, a documented gang member, was found guilty of murder and sentenced to 25 years in prison. During the trial, it was revealed that Sparks fired 14 rounds during the fight, with one of the bullets striking Freney in the head. The jury concluded that Sparks' actions resulted in Freney's death.
