He was a 47-year-old male from Fort Worth, Texas. On the night of August 28, 2022, he went to the Southeast Fort Worth home of a woman he had been dating. Inside the living room, her estranged husband refused to leave, confronted him at gunpoint, and patted him down; he was unarmed. When he tried to go, the doorway was blocked and a fistfight erupted. The struggle spilled to the floor, five shots rang out, and as he rose to a knee—no longer touching the gunman—two more bullets struck, one in the chest and one in the arm. Bleeding heavily, he staggered outside as the woman called 911. He was taken to a hospital, where he died on the operating table in the early hours that followed.
The shooter was identified by police and witnesses as David Arce, the woman’s estranged husband. Officers arriving at the scene detained Arce, and he was booked into the Tarrant County Jail on a murder charge the next day. In court proceedings that followed, jurors heard from detectives, the medical examiner, and family members. The jury found Arce guilty of murder, specifically concluding he acted under the “immediate influence of sudden passion,” and assessed his punishment at 20 years in state prison; the conviction was affirmed on appeal.
Years earlier, he had survived another violent episode tied to a different man’s jealousy. In 2010, while returning from a first date with a Fort Worth single mother, their car was rammed and they were ambushed by the woman’s onetime suitor, Finnis Davis II. Both were shot—he in the ear, she in the thigh—but lived. Davis was arrested soon after and, in 2012, a jury convicted him of attempted capital murder and sent him to prison for 50 years.
