Estelle Stanfill Akeman, aged 58, was tragically murdered on November 10, 1973, in Ridgetop, Tennessee. She and her husband, David 'Stringbean' Akeman, were found slain in their home by their neighbor, fellow Opry performer Louis Marshall 'Grandpa' Jones. The couple was known for their humble lifestyle and were beloved members of the country music community.
The investigation revealed that the couple was killed by two cousins, John A. Brown and Marvin Douglas Brown, both 23 years old at the time. The Brown cousins had heard rumors that the Akemans kept large amounts of cash in their home and decided to rob them. They waited for the Akemans to return from a show at the Grand Ole Opry before carrying out the crime. Estelle was shot in the back of the head as she ran away and begged for her life.
Both John A. Brown and Marvin Douglas Brown were arrested and charged with the murders. They were convicted and sentenced to life in prison. Marvin Douglas Brown died of natural causes in 2003 while still incarcerated, but John A. Brown was released on parole in 2014. The case brought fear to the Nashville music community and marked the end of an era of innocence in country music.
Despite the tragic circumstances, the investigation also uncovered a significant amount of money hidden in the Akeman home, which had deteriorated and was no longer usable. The discovery of this money added another layer of intrigue to the case.
