Chief of Police Richard Carrington, aged 40, was shot and killed in an ambush by a man he had previously arrested on September 25, 1981, in Lexington, Tennessee. The suspect had taken a woman hostage and instructed her to call Chief Carrington, telling her he planned to murder him.
