On a September day in 2013, the community of Renegade Mountain, Tennessee, was rocked by a grim discovery. Twenty-two-year-old Rikki Danielle Jacobsen was found deceased in her car, the victim of a fatal shooting. Alongside her were three teenage boys: 17-year-old Steven Presley, 17-year-old Domonic Lewis Davis, and 16-year-old Jonathan R. Lajeunesse, who had also been shot and killed. Jacobsen, a mother to a young son, was found in the driver's seat of the vehicle.
The investigation into the quadruple homicide quickly led law enforcement to identify suspects. Jacob Allen Bennett and his girlfriend, Brittany Moser, were soon arrested in connection with the killings. Investigators pieced together a narrative suggesting the motive for the crime was a drug-related robbery. It was believed that Bennett and Moser had planned to steal marijuana from Jacobsen and Davis. Authorities indicated that Bennett had a prior acquaintance with Jacobsen.
Following their arrests, a grand jury indicted both Bennett and Moser on multiple charges, including felony murder and attempted aggravated robbery. Bennett faced the more severe charge of premeditated murder, and the prosecution announced its intention to seek the death penalty in his case. During his initial court appearance, Bennett expressed a desire to plead guilty without legal representation, a request that the judge later dismissed to ensure his constitutional rights were protected.
