In the summer of 2017, the life of Timothy R. Smith, a 46-year-old male from the Maynardville, Tennessee area, was tragically cut short. On the morning of Sunday, July 23, 2017, deputies from the Union County Sheriff's Office were called to a residence in Andersonville where they discovered Mr. Smith's body in the driveway of the home he shared with his wife.
He had sustained a single gunshot wound.
The initial investigation into Timothy Smith's death quickly centered on his wife, Shannon Smith. She was present at the scene when law enforcement arrived, and a handgun was also recovered from the driveway. The Tennessee Bureau of Investigation was brought in to assist the Union County Sheriff's Office in the homicide investigation. Investigators learned that the shooting occurred following a heated argument between the couple. It was reported that Shannon Smith had harbored intense jealousy and had repeatedly accused her husband of infidelity.
Following the investigation, Shannon Smith was arrested and charged with the second-degree murder of her husband. In March 2019, the case went to trial in Union County. During the proceedings, prosecutors presented evidence that included an audio recording of the argument that preceded the fatal shooting, as well as incriminating statements Shannon Smith had made. Her defense attorney acknowledged that she had shot her husband, framing the central question of the trial as not if she did it, but why.
The jury found Shannon Smith guilty of second-degree murder. She was subsequently sentenced to serve 17 years in a Tennessee prison for the killing of her husband, Timothy Smith. In the years following her conviction, her legal team filed appeals seeking a new trial. These appeals raised issues concerning the conduct of one of the lead detectives in the case. However, in January 2023, the state Court of Criminal Appeals ultimately denied her bid for a new trial, upholding the jury's verdict.
