On a spring day in Cosby, Tennessee, a domestic turmoil reached a fatal conclusion, ending the life of 36-year-old John Paul Dunn. The male victim was discovered in the driveway of a residence with a single gunshot wound on April 5, 2019. Events leading up to the shooting began as a verbal and physical altercation between Dunn and his mother.
The dispute escalated when Dunn's stepfather, 63-year-old Olin Hellard, intervened.
According to the Cocke County Sheriff's Department, Dunn had been asked to leave the property multiple times but had refused. Hellard reportedly armed himself with a 12-gauge shotgun to confront his stepson. An exchange occurred where Dunn allegedly challenged Hellard about his intentions for not leaving.
Following the confrontation, Dunn reportedly got into his vehicle and started to drive up the driveway, but then turned back towards Hellard. It was at this point that Hellard allegedly pointed the shotgun at Dunn and fired the fatal shot. Law enforcement officers who arrived at the scene administered first aid to Dunn before he was transported to Newport Medical Center, where he was pronounced dead.
Olin Hellard was taken into custody in connection with the shooting. He was subsequently arrested and charged with second-degree murder. Investigators determined that Hellard's actions were an excessive and unnecessary response to the domestic dispute. This tragic incident underscores the devastating potential of family conflicts.
