James H. Sheehy, a 35-year-old male police officer with the Pittsburgh Bureau of Police, tragically died on May 18, 1902. Officer Sheehy was shot and killed while escorting a prisoner to the station. He was providing backup to a fellow officer on Logan Street near Wylie Avenue. Both officers had apprehended some suspects and were walking them to the station when the prisoner pulled a gun and shot Officer Sheehy three times.
The suspect fled the scene but was later apprehended in January 1906 by Pittsburgh Police Officers in the city's North Side.
The suspect was found guilty of voluntary manslaughter and sentenced to 12 years in prison in April 1906. Officer Sheehy had served with the Pittsburgh Police Department for six years and was survived by his wife and six children. His funeral was held on May 20, 1902, at Saint Paul's Cathedral.
Officer Sheehy's death was a significant event in Pittsburgh's history, and his sacrifice is remembered and honored by his family and the community. His legacy lives on through the remembrance of his dedication and service to the city.
