Constable William Shields, a 41-year-old Pennsylvania State Constable, was shot and killed on October 16, 1903, in the Glassport Hotel along Allegheny Avenue in Glassport, Pennsylvania. Shields was attempting to serve a warrant when the incident occurred. Earlier that day, two men had caused their dog to attack a railroad worker, leading to the issuance of warrants for their arrest.
