Constable William Shields, a 41-year-old Pennsylvania State Constable, was shot and killed on October 16, 1903, in the Glassport Hotel along Allegheny Avenue in Glassport, Pennsylvania. Shields was attempting to serve a warrant when the incident occurred. Earlier that day, two men had caused their dog to attack a railroad worker, leading to the issuance of warrants for their arrest.
Shields, along with two Glassport police officers, located the men at the hotel.
One of the men was taken into custody without incident, but the second man, upon being located inside the hotel's restaurant, opened fire with a pistol. Shields was killed in the ensuing shootout, and the suspect was also killed by return gunfire. The second suspect managed to escape.
