In the early hours of Sunday, November 3, 2013, a night of music and socializing at the Epic nightclub in downtown Minneapolis turned deadly. Tyrone Torress Washington Jr., a 27-year-old African-American man from Brooklyn Park, was inside the club when violence erupted. An argument between Washington and another individual escalated, leading to the fatal shooting. Police were called to the scene in the Minneapolis Warehouse District at approximately 1 a.m. and found Washington on the sidewalk outside the venue. He was pronounced dead from a gunshot wound to the chest.
Investigators quickly began looking into the circumstances of the shooting, which occurred while the rapper Yo Gotti was performing, about an hour before the club was set to close. The investigation revealed that Washington had an extensive criminal history. Court documents indicated that Washington was a known member of the "19 Block DipSet" street gang and had been previously ordered by a court to stay away from the downtown area. Despite this, he was present at the nightclub on the night of his death. Authorities explored the possibility that the killing was gang-related, stemming from an ongoing conflict with rival gangs known as Young N Thuggin' and Taliban.
In the wake of the shooting, law enforcement officials expressed concerns about potential retaliatory violence. The investigation was hampered by a lack of cooperation from witnesses, many of whom were associates of Washington and were reluctant to speak with the police. A search warrant was filed to examine the Facebook page of a 22-year-old man from a rival gang who was at the club that night and had allegedly made threats against Washington. When questioned, the man admitted to disliking Washington due to their rival gang affiliation but denied any responsibility for his death. To date, no arrests have been made in connection with the murder of Tyrone Torress Washington Jr., and his case remains unsolved.
