In the pre-dawn hours of June 9, 2015, 63-year-old Thomas Childs arrived for his shift as a delivery truck driver at Ridgway Industries in Yeadon, Pennsylvania, a routine he had followed for 15 years. It was a day that began like any other, but it would end in a senseless act of violence that cut his life short. As he was preparing for his route, a man approached him in the loading dock area with the intent to rob him. A struggle ensued, and two shots were fired from a 9-millimeter handgun.
The second shot struck the male victim in the back, inflicting a fatal wound. The assailant fled the scene with a meager sum of around $20 and Childs' company-issued cell phone. A coworker arriving for work around the same time would later provide a description of the man he saw.
The investigation into the death of Thomas Childs quickly identified a person of interest. Authorities released a description of the suspect as a light-skinned Black male, estimated to be in his early twenties. A crucial piece of evidence, a ping from the victim's stolen cell phone, led investigators to the nearby Fernwood Cemetery shortly after the discovery of Childs' body. Despite these early leads, the suspect remained at large for over a year. The case gained public attention as a reward was offered for information leading to an arrest and conviction.
In June of 2016, a warrant was issued for the arrest of Rodney Talbo Shelton II, a then 37-year-old from North Carolina who was known to frequent the Philadelphia area. Shelton, a twice-convicted felon, was officially named as the primary suspect in the murder of Thomas Childs. The search for Shelton intensified, with law enforcement agencies, including the U.S. Marshals, actively pursuing him. He was considered armed and dangerous, and it was believed he may have altered his appearance to evade capture.
After an 18-month manhunt, Rodney Shelton was apprehended on December 9, 2016, in Decatur, Georgia. Acting on a tip, U.S. Marshals located him at his girlfriend's apartment. Shelton initially attempted to flee out the back door but was quickly taken into custody by the authorities who had surrounded the residence. He was held in Georgia before being extradited to Pennsylvania to face charges for his crimes.
Rodney Shelton was charged with first, second, and third-degree murder, as well as robbery and related firearms offenses. On June 22, 2018, following a jury trial in the Delaware County Court of Common Pleas, he was convicted of second-degree murder, robbery-inflict serious bodily injury, possession of a firearm with an altered manufacturer number, possession of a firearm by a prohibited person, and carrying a firearm without a license. For the murder of Thomas Childs, Rodney Shelton received a mandatory minimum sentence of life in prison without the possibility of parole.
