In the late afternoon of Monday, September 28, 2015, the community of North Braddock, Pennsylvania, lost a beloved figure in a sudden act of violence. Harry Vaughn, a 65-year-old man known by many as a kind and positive influence, was killed in his own home. Friends and family remembered him as a man who treated everyone like family, someone the neighborhood kids looked up to, calling him 'uncle, brother, and even, hey dad.'
His life was tragically cut short during what authorities described as a planned robbery that turned fatal.
Two teenagers, 17-year-old Jordan Johnson and 16-year-old Destiny Walker, entered Vaughn's residence on Ridge Avenue through a back door with the intention of robbing him. Inside, Johnson reportedly pointed a gun at a woman, whose screams alerted Vaughn from another room. Rushing to her aid, Vaughn confronted the teens and a struggle ensued as he tried to disarm them. During the chaotic altercation, several shots were fired, and Vaughn was struck under his left arm. He was pronounced dead at the scene shortly after. The two teenagers fled, with Johnson sustaining a gunshot wound to his hand.
The investigation quickly led police to the two suspects. Destiny Walker was found at Jordan Johnson's home and taken into custody. Johnson was located at a local hospital where he had sought treatment for his hand, initially claiming he had been a victim of random gunfire. During questioning, the teens reportedly blamed each other for firing the weapon. Authorities charged both Johnson and Walker as adults with homicide, robbery, and conspiracy. Johnson faced additional charges, including possession of a firearm by a minor.
The legal proceedings that followed saw the two young perpetrators take different paths. Jordan Johnson, the teen who pulled the trigger, eventually pleaded guilty to third-degree murder. He was sentenced to serve 17 and a half to 40 years in prison for his role in the deadly home invasion. Destiny Walker's case took a more complex route. She was initially found guilty of second-degree murder in a non-jury trial, a conviction that could have carried a sentence of up to life in prison, even for a juvenile. However, her attorney argued that this was a miscarriage of justice, as she was less culpable than Johnson. The judge agreed to vacate the verdict, allowing her case to be re-evaluated. Ultimately, Walker pleaded guilty to third-degree murder, robbery, and conspiracy and received a sentence of 80 to 160 months in prison, to be followed by a lengthy period of probation.
