Keith P. Hughes, a 43-year-old man from Westfall Township, PA, tragically died on January 1, 2016, from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was treated at the scene by the Westfall Fire Department Ambulance and then flown by helicopter to Morristown Hospital in Morristown, New Jersey, where he succumbed to his injuries at approximately 11:40 p.m.
The incident occurred at Hughes' home on 121 North Castle Drive in Westfall Township.
According to police reports, Keith Hughes' wife, Jeanette Hughes, 46, shot him during an argument about their minor son. The argument escalated when Keith Hughes pulled a plate of food off Jeanette's lap, smashed it on the floor, and then put his forearm across her face while yelling at her. Jeanette Hughes claimed she felt threatened and retrieved a .22 caliber firearm from a safe. Keith Hughes reportedly told her to "go ahead and shoot me," before she fired the fatal shot.
Jeanette Hughes was arrested and charged with criminal homicide on January 2, 2016. She was arraigned before Magisterial District Judge Alan B. Cooper and remanded to the Pike County Correctional Facility without bail. The Pennsylvania State Police Forensic Services Unit, the Criminal Investigation Unit from the Pennsylvania State Police Blooming Grove Barracks, and the Pike County Detective Bureau assisted with the investigation.
In the aftermath of the incident, Jeanette Hughes pleaded guilty to voluntary manslaughter - unreasonable belief and was sentenced to serve between 3 years and 6 months to 7 years in prison, plus 3 years probation. The court also ordered her to attend Pike County Catholic Social Services for an evaluation and complete any recommended treatment at her own expense.
The case drew significant attention in the community, with many expressing sympathy for Jeanette Hughes, citing the concept of battered spouse syndrome.
