In the early morning hours of a Tuesday in August 2016, life for 27-year-old Darryl Curry was tragically cut short in a hail of bullets. Known to his friends and family as 'Deek,' the young man was on the front porch of his grandmother's apartment in Darby, Pennsylvania, a place he frequented despite living in nearby Clifton Heights. It was there, at approximately 2:06 a.m., that he was ambushed.
According to police, one or more individuals approached Curry, and after a brief
conversation, gunfire erupted. Between six and ten shots were fired, striking Curry multiple times. He made a desperate attempt to get inside the apartment, but collapsed at the front door. Officers who arrived on the scene just minutes after the shooting found him unresponsive and immediately began CPR, but their efforts were in vain. Medics pronounced him dead at 2:14 a.m. Bullets from the assault also penetrated the hallway of the apartment building, though thankfully no one else was injured.
Investigators quickly began piecing together Curry's final hours. He had been at a local bar earlier in the evening, leaving just before 2 a.m. Surveillance footage from the establishment didn't show any altercations or anything out of the ordinary. His family also mentioned that he had made a stop at a gas station before heading to his grandmother's home. Police believe the motive for the attack was robbery and that Curry was the intended target, though the specifics of why he was targeted remain unclear. While more than one assailant may have been involved, as of late 2023, no suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in the case, leaving a community and a grieving family searching for answers.
