In the early morning hours of Saturday, January 21, 2017, the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, awoke to a grim discovery. A 31-year-old Black male named Nijah Carpenter was found deceased in his red 2002 Nissan Altima. The vehicle was parked partially in the 500 block of East 11th Street and a neighboring field. It was pedestrians in the area who first noticed the unresponsive man and flagged down a passing Chester police officer around 8:20 a.m.
Upon approaching the vehicle, the officer
observed blood around Carpenter's mouth and on his chest. After gaining entry to the car, it became apparent that he had sustained a gunshot wound. Medics were called to the scene, but it was too late; Nijah Carpenter was pronounced dead.
Authorities immediately began investigating his death as a homicide. At the time of the initial reports, no arrests had been made in connection with the shooting, and police appealed to the public for any information that might lead to a suspect or suspects. The Delaware County Medical Examiner's Office was tasked with conducting an autopsy to officially determine the cause of death. Despite the ongoing investigation, there have been no subsequent public announcements regarding any arrests or the identification of any suspects in the years following the incident.
