In the quiet borough of Clairton, Pennsylvania, a neighbor's concern on a cold January morning in 2018 led to a grim discovery that shattered the peace of their School Street community. Louise Lewis, a 73-year-old woman, was found unresponsive on the porch of her home. When first responders arrived shortly after 8 a.m. on January 17th, they pronounced her dead at the scene.
Just inside the open front door of the residence, authorities found her husband, 72-year-old Robert Lewis, also deceased. Investigators from the Allegheny County Police determined that both had suffered fatal gunshot wounds. The incident was quickly investigated as an apparent murder-suicide. Police believe that Robert Lewis shot and killed his wife before turning the gun on himself. Authorities stated that they did not suspect any other individuals were involved in the deaths.
Adding to the tragedy, first responders at the home detected a strong odor of natural gas and discovered a small fire burning near a clothes dryer in the basement. A neighbor reported hearing a loud bang and seeing flames coming from the basement area while she was outside shoveling snow. It was this neighbor who, upon approaching the house to check on the occupants, found Louise Lewis on the porch and immediately called 911. The fire was extinguished, and the gas line was shut off by emergency crews. Neighbors remembered the couple as friendly people and were shocked by the sudden violence that ended their lives.
