In the winter of 2019, the city of Chester, Pennsylvania, marked its first homicide of the year with the death of 18-year-old Yahmire Curry. On the afternoon of February 11th, shortly after 1 p.m., city police responded to reports of a gunshot victim in the 700 block of Pennell Street. Upon arrival, they discovered that Curry had been shot multiple times and had been transported to Crozer-Chester Medical Center, where he ultimately succumbed to his injuries and was pronounced dead.
Just days before his death, Curry had posted on Facebook, 'I'm just not myself Right now wish these better days hurry up!'. The day after his passing, his sister gave birth to a baby boy.
The investigation into the shooting quickly led to two suspects, brothers Christopher and Lamar R. Gordy. Following the incident, Lamar Gordy approached police officers at the hospital and confessed, stating, 'I just shot someone and the gun is on me.' Authorities found him in possession of a 9 mm Taurus handgun that was used in the shooting. Initially, Lamar claimed that he had acted in self-defense, alleging that Curry had shot at him first. However, witness interviews and the evidence collected at the crime scene, where it was determined Curry had been shot 20 times, contradicted this account. The investigation revealed that the shooting was the culmination of an argument between the Gordy brothers and Curry. One of the brothers was allegedly heard saying, 'I told young bull to stop f****** playing with me,' after the shooting.
In May 2019, both Christopher and Lamar Gordy were arrested and charged with first-degree murder and other related offenses. In a turn of events in December 2022, the brothers pleaded guilty to the lesser charge of third-degree murder, along with firearms offenses. As a result of their pleas, both Christopher and Lamar Gordy were sentenced to serve 15 to 30 years in state prison for their roles in the death of Yahmire Curry. Lamar Gordy also received a concurrent sentence for an unrelated rape charge.
