On October 31, 2019, twelve-year-old Laina Rae Haney was tragically shot and killed in her home in New Paris, Bedford County, Pennsylvania. Her mother, Amanda Jane Figard, was also found deceased at the scene. The incident occurred between 4:00 and 8:00 p.m. on the 2700 block of Rocklick Hollow Road in Napier Township.
Authorities determined that Laina's stepfather, Benjamin Figard, was responsible for the killings.
Figard, aged 35, called 911 and confessed to shooting both his wife and stepdaughter. He was taken into custody without incident and charged with criminal homicide, first-degree murder, voluntary manslaughter, and tampering with evidence.
During the investigation, police found evidence of an attempted cleanup at the crime scene, including blood-stained paper towels and cleaning supplies. Figard allegedly moved Laina's body to the basement after shooting her in the living room. The Bedford County Coroner pronounced both victims dead at the scene.
Figard was denied bail and remains in Bedford County Jail awaiting trial. The case has drawn significant attention due to the tragic nature of the crime and the involvement of a family member as the perpetrator.
