In the winter of 2011, a tragic event unfolded on the east side of Detroit, forever altering the lives of three families. On January 21st, 19-year-old Lynnell Baskin Jr., a male, was found shot to death inside a residence on Faircrest, near the intersection of Seven Mile Road and Hayes. He was not alone; two other young men, 22-year-old Jermaine and 24-year-old Leon Grice, also lost their lives in the violent encounter.
Investigators arriving at the scene found no indication of a forced
entry, leading them to believe the victims may have known their assailant or assailants. The atmosphere inside the house hinted at a potential motive, as Detroit Police homicide investigator Charles Weaver noted that the location was suspected of being a hub for narcotic sales. Further adding to the grim discovery, eleven pit bull dogs were found at the home and were subsequently taken into the care of the Michigan Humane Society.
In the wake of the triple homicide, the families of the victims were left grappling with immense grief and a desperate need for answers. Deloris Kirk, Jermaine's mother, made a tearful public plea for anyone with information to come forward, emphasizing how beloved her son was. 'If anybody knows anything, please, just please... you don't even have to leave your name. Just, just call,' she implored. To encourage tips, CrimeStoppers offered a reward of up to $2,500 for information that would lead to an arrest in the case.
Despite the initial investigation and the public appeals for information, the case of Lynnell Baskin and the other two victims has grown cold over the years. As time passed with no resolution, a sense of frustration mounted within the community and among those who remembered the crime.
