Patrolman Patrick W. Sweeney, aged 59, was a dedicated officer with the Tiffin Police Department in Ohio. On the night of March 27, 1908, while on duty, he interrupted a burglary at the Breckley Grocery store on North Washington Street. As he climbed the stairs, shots were heard from inside the building. A man, later identified as a recently released convict, ran from the scene firing at two ladies who witnessed the incident but missed them.
