Patrolman Patrick W. Sweeney, aged 59, was a dedicated officer with the Tiffin Police Department in Ohio. On the night of March 27, 1908, while on duty, he interrupted a burglary at the Breckley Grocery store on North Washington Street. As he climbed the stairs, shots were heard from inside the building. A man, later identified as a recently released convict, ran from the scene firing at two ladies who witnessed the incident but missed them.
Patrolman Sweeney was found inside the building and was taken to Brick's saloon before being transferred to Toledo for surgery. Despite the medical intervention, he succumbed to his injuries the following day. Before passing away, he named the suspect responsible for shooting him. The suspect, known to Sweeney and recently released from prison in Columbus, was never apprehended.
The case remains unsolved to this day, and the suspect, believed to be a desperate criminal named William "Butch" Huffman, was never brought to justice. Patrolman Sweeney, an Irish immigrant, had served the Tiffin Police Department for 35 years and was survived by his six sons. He is buried in Saint Mary Catholic Cemetery in Tiffin, Ohio.
