Trooper James R. Gross, age 27, was tragically shot and killed on January 19, 1996, while performing his duties with the Ohio State Highway Patrol in Ashland, Ohio. Gross was responding to a report of an erratic driver on Interstate 71 when he approached the vehicle and was shot twice by the driver. The suspect, identified as Maxwell D. White Jr., age 30, had a history of legal troubles and had previously shot his mother in the foot during an altercation earlier that day.
