In the summer of 2011, a grim discovery was made in a Detroit neighborhood that left a family shattered and a community searching for answers. On June 26th, authorities responded to a call on Westmoreland Street, near 7 Mile Road, where they found the remains of two young men. One of the victims was later identified as 24-year-old Charles W. Reid, a Black male from Detroit. The other man was 26-year-old Martez Norwood.
The investigation revealed a brutal and calculated crime.
Both Reid and Norwood had been shot before their bodies were set on fire, burned beyond recognition. The shocking nature of the double homicide sent ripples of fear and outrage through the city. Despite the horrific details of the crime, the investigation into the deaths of Charles Reid and Martez Norwood has been met with a frustrating lack of progress over the years.
To this day, the case remains unsolved. No suspects have been publicly identified, and no arrests have been made in connection with the murders. The absence of closure has been a heavy burden for the victims' families. In the face of this ongoing pain, Charles Reid's mother has become a vocal advocate for justice. Her tireless efforts to keep her son's memory alive and to bring attention to his unsolved case led her to establish the Charles W. Reid Community Help Center, an organization dedicated to supporting others affected by violence in Detroit. The community has also held rallies and marches to raise awareness about the pervasive issue of gun violence and to honor the memories of the two young men whose lives were so tragically cut short.
