Margaret "Peggy" Kostelnik, a 60-year-old woman from Chardon, Ohio, tragically lost her life on July 27, 2015. She was an active member of her community, working as an assistant to the mayor of Willoughby and dedicating 27 years to the city's Community Development Department and Airport Commission. Peggy was known for her love of animals and her dedication to Greyhound Adoption of Ohio.
On the day of her death, a manhunt was launched for Juan Emmanuel Razo, a 35-year-old suspect who was
later arrested. Razo was accused of attempted rape of a 14-year-old girl earlier that day and the shooting of a mother walking with her children on the Greenway bike path, which is located near Peggy's home. Peggy was found dead by her husband, Bill, in their home on Ravenna Road. The suspect was charged with attempted murder and later indicted on multiple charges, including the aggravated murder of Peggy Kostelnik.
The tragic incident shook the community, and grief counselors were made available to support those affected. Peggy's death highlighted the impact of violence even in quiet, family-oriented suburbs and raised questions about immigration policies and law enforcement responses.
