Tyler was shot in the head by Demarcus Staley, 19, of Cincinnati, during a planned robbery. Staley, along with Rodney Foster, 19, Justin Koch, 18, and Jibril Willingham, 20, were involved in the incident. The four men drove to Tyler's house wearing ski masks and forced their way in after Tyler's little brother opened the door. The attack was not random and was confirmed to be drug-related.
A grand jury indicted all four men on charges of murder, kidnapping, aggravated robbery, burglary, and tampering with evidence. Staley was charged with murder, while the other three faced complicity to murder charges. Each man was held in the Butler County Jail, with Staley held on a $1.5 million bond, Foster on a $1 million bond, and Koch and Willingham each on a $250,000 bond. In the aftermath of the incident, Demarcus Staley pleaded guilty to murder and was sentenced to 21 years to life. Rodney Foster and Justin Koch also pled guilty and received 15 years to life sentences. Jibril Willingham was set to go to trial but ultimately pled guilty as well.
