Javanta Virden, a 25-year-old African American man from Akron, OH, tragically passed away on December 26, 2016. He was working on a vehicle in a parking lot on Ericsson Avenue when he was approached by three individuals and subsequently shot. Virden was taken to Summa Akron City Hospital, where he later succumbed to his injuries.
The investigation into Virden's death led to the arrest of Darshawn McCormick, who was found guilty of two counts of murder, felonious assault, and having a
weapon under disability. Evidence at the scene linked McCormick to the crime, and he was sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 20½ years.
The case brought significant attention to issues of gun violence and the impact on families and communities. Virden's mother, Temakia Mitchell, expressed her grief and hoped for justice for her son.
