Shpetim Ramadani, an 18-year-old male of Albanian ethnicity, tragically lost his life on February 13, 2018, in Akron, Ohio. Ramadani was shot and killed while sitting in the back seat of a friend's car on Margaret Street. The incident was the result of a dispute over an ounce of marijuana.
Two teenagers, John Smith, who was 16 at the time of the shooting, and Tyler Morgan, who was 19, were arrested and charged with Ramadani's murder.
Smith was charged as an adult, while Morgan was already an adult at the time of the crime. Both teenagers pleaded no contest to the charges and were found guilty of murder with a gun specification.
In July 2019, Smith and Morgan were each sentenced to life in prison with the possibility of parole after 15 years. The sentencing brought some measure of justice to Ramadani's family, who had fled from the Balkans in the late 1990s to escape violence and seek a better life in Akron. Unfortunately, their dream of a peaceful life was shattered by the tragic loss of their son.
