Dr. Richard Warn, a 59-year-old male of Caucasian ethnicity, was a well-respected podiatrist in the Cleveland area for over 30 years. On August 9, 2018, he was tragically found dead in his Beachwood, OH home from five to six gunshot wounds. His wife, Jane Warn, had returned from vacation and discovered the house locked, prompting her to call the police. Upon entering the home, officers found Dr. Warn's body inside.
The investigation quickly led police to Dr. Warn's other property on Elmwood Road in South Euclid, where his two sons, Michael Warn and Mark Warn , were residing. A standoff ensued when SWAT officers attempted to serve a search warrant at the South Euclid home. During the standoff, someone inside the house fired at the SWAT vehicle, prompting the team to retreat. After a 12-hour standoff, police forcibly entered the home and discovered the bodies of Michael and Mark Warn, both of whom had died from self-inflicted gunshot wounds.
Beachwood Police Chief Gary Haba stated that the evidence pointed to Michael and Mark Warn as responsible for their father's death. However, no clear motive was established. The police chief mentioned that there had been prior police calls to the Warns' house, but he did not consider it a problem home. Mental illness was suggested as a possible factor, but this was not confirmed.
The tragic incident was ruled a murder-suicide, with the Cuyahoga County Medical Examiner's Office confirming that both sons died from gunshot wounds to the head. The Ohio Bureau of Criminal Investigation took over the investigation, processing any weapons recovered from the home.
