Martez Thomas, a 23-year-old man from Lyndhurst, Ohio, was tragically shot and killed on September 4, 2018, in Cleveland, OH. Thomas was sitting in his car on East 121st Street when two suspects approached his vehicle and opened the doors. The suspects then began firing, hitting Thomas in the head and chest. He was rushed to University Hospitals Medical Center but was declared dead upon arrival.
Another person in the car was also shot and hospitalized.
The investigation revealed that the suspects fled the scene in a vehicle that was later seen dropping off a wounded individual at South Pointe Hospital. This individual, identified as Walter Jackson, was arrested and charged with aggravated murder and felonious assault. Ballistics testing and DNA evidence linked Jackson to the crime. Jackson was on probation for two gun offenses at the time of the shooting.
Delvonte Philpotts was later identified as the mastermind behind the robbery setup. Philpotts had contacted Thomas, claiming he wanted to buy a refurbished iPhone, and lured him to the scene. Philpotts was found guilty of aggravated murder, aggravated robbery, murder, felonious assault, involuntary manslaughter, and discharge of a firearm on or near prohibited premises. He was sentenced to life in prison without the possibility of parole.
The case highlighted the dangers of street-level robberies and the severe consequences of such violent acts. Martez Thomas's family has been vocal about their grief and the need for justice, expressing relief that Philpotts will be held accountable for his actions.
