In the summer of 2012, a violent wave of crime swept through Detroit, claiming the life of 19-year-old Black male Demetrius Brown, Jr. The incident occurred in the midst of a particularly deadly month for the city. On or around July 16, 2012, authorities responded to a situation at a residence located at 5925 Hurlbut Street on the city’s east side.
