In the summer of 2012, a violent wave of crime swept through Detroit, claiming the life of 19-year-old Black male Demetrius Brown, Jr. The incident occurred in the midst of a particularly deadly month for the city. On or around July 16, 2012, authorities responded to a situation at a residence located at 5925 Hurlbut Street on the city’s east side. It was at this location that the young man became one of nearly 400 homicide victims recorded in Detroit that year.
