On August 12, 2020, Romere Harris, a 2-year-old boy from Columbus, OH, tragically died after being shot in the head by his 14-year-old uncle, Charles Hodge Jr. Romere was at home with his uncle, who was babysitting him and his 1-year-old niece while their mother was out getting food. Charles Hodge Jr. admitted to handling a gun when it discharged, striking Romere. Despite attempts at CPR, Romere was pronounced dead at Nationwide Children's Hospital.
Charles Hodge Jr. was charged with reckless homicide and tampering with evidence in Franklin County Juvenile Court. The incident occurred in the 300 block of North Monroe Avenue on the East Side of Columbus. This tragic event marked the 85th homicide in Columbus for the year 2020.
The community was deeply affected by Romere's death, and a GoFundMe fundraiser was set up to help his family cover funeral expenses. The incident highlighted the dangers of firearms in homes, especially when children are present.
